Tuna

The tuna is an excellent edible fish thanks to its firm, red meat. It is a rare guest in Danish waters, but in the summer it can be spotted along the Norwegian west coast.

The tuna is one of the lean fish types having less than 2 g of fat per 100 g. It is rich in protein and the healthy Omega-3 fatty acids. Tuna fillets are best when prepared in a frying pan or on the grill.

A life of migration

The tuna primarily lives in warm and temperate waters, but during the summer – after having spawned – it swims north to seek food. The tuna lives in shoals, which migrate over long distances hunting other shoals of fish such as mackerel, herring and garfish. A large fish, it normally weighs between 150 and 200 kg, but specimens of up to 700 kg have been caught. Today, however, fish that large have become a rare sight.

For its production of tuna fillets, Aker Seafoods has tuna caught in the Indian Ocean flown to Denmark.
